Ciders

The Miners Arms prides itself in its excellent range of Ales and Ciders. It received the prestigious title of CAMRA Cider & Perry Pub of the year in 2005. Since then the new landlord, Mario, has increased the range of Ciders and is actively looking for more interesting flavours to share with his customers. We want feedback and recommendations from you to share with our customers.  We stock ar range of ciders (not all on at the same time). Currently we have a range of locally brewed Cadogan, Severn and Orchard Ciders on offer as well as some welsh cider from the Welsh Gwynth Draig brewers (Dragons Breath!).

Orchard medium recently pressed and tastes good (well done Stan! – the brewer)

Black Rat (6%)

Black Rat Cider is a West Country Scrumpy. In the Miners we sell traditional which is cloudy, flat and a little acidic with a musty red apple taste and is easy to drink.

It is sold They are both sold under the banner of Moles Brewery of Melksham in Wiltshire although it is actually made under license by Thatchers of Somerset who, incidentally, provide the base apple juice for Magners.

There are two distinct scrumpy making areas in England; The West Country and Herefordshire. The scrumpies of these areas tend to be very different due to the apple growing conditions and the variety of apples used.

Somerset cider tends to be sweeter and with a more pronounced taste of apples than its acidic macho cousin on the Welsh Borders. Both will scramble the brain. So it is with Black Rat.

On draught at the Miners we stock both Traditional (6%)and Heritage (4.9%).They are by far the most popular tipple with our regular day-time trade (apart from Bernie the ‘Rat Man’ – because he only drinks Black Rat with Absinthe chasers – see him on the regulars page.) Some regulars, particularly Dougie, like the balanced taste of a mix of both with a dash of lemonade to sweeten.

Despite his surname, Keith Orchard didn't gravitate towards the manufacture of Cider and Perry until he purchased a 200 year old farm in the picturesque WyeValley. Having lain abandoned for over 10 years, hidden in the over grown orchard was a treasure trove of Cider Apple and Perry Pear trees that seemed perfect for the manufacture of Keith's chosen tipple.

The Miners team love both the  Farm House Dry and Medium and promote them to visitors to the forest as good quality locally produced ciders.

Cadogan Cider & Perry

For many years the Cadogan family have been supplying other cider and Perry producers with fruit.  They have four mature orchards of traditional standard trees that have never been sprayed with pesticides or as like. Their trees produce several varieties of cider apples and Perry pears. They have now begun to produce their own cider and Perry.  This cider is made from a blend of their own traditionally pressed cider apple variety and matured in oak barrels for many months. They have carefully chosen the best fruit we have to make these delicious drinks.

Their drinks do not contain concentrated juice or artificial additives, but may contain naturally produced sulphites.

This delicious Perry would grace any regal banqueting table with it’s not too dry taste of Blakeney Red pears ripened on the slopes of the River Severn - a Perry to be savoured and sipped with elegance in mind.

Medium Dry Cider is again achieved from a variety of cider apples including Dabinetts to give this not too dry taste of country life.
